Air source heat pumps
An air source heat pump extracts energy from outside air using an outdoor unit. Installation normally requires less ground work than a ground source system, making ASHPs practical for many existing properties where suitable siting and system design can be achieved.
Ground source heat pumps
A ground source heat pump collects energy through buried ground loops or boreholes. This requires suitable land or drilling and therefore involves significant ground infrastructure, but the ground provides a relatively stable heat source.
Which is right for your property?
There is no universal winner. The choice depends on heat loss, available land, geology, outdoor-unit siting, existing emitters, hot-water demand, electrical supply, budget and the practicalities of the installation.
System design matters
Heat pumps generally work best when the entire system is designed around appropriate flow temperatures and emitter output. Simply choosing a heat pump by nominal kW rating is not a substitute for proper system assessment.
