Start with heat loss
Whatever the heat source, the building has a heating demand. Understanding that demand is particularly important for heat-pump design because emitter output and flow temperatures are closely linked.
Existing radiators and pipework
A boiler replacement may be able to use much of the existing system, subject to condition and design. A heat-pump conversion may require closer assessment of radiator outputs, pipe sizes and system flow requirements.
Hot water
A combi boiler can produce instantaneous hot water without a separate cylinder. Most heat-pump installations use stored hot water, so suitable cylinder space and hot-water design become important.
Outside space
An air source heat pump requires a suitable outdoor-unit location. Ground source requires ground loops or boreholes, making site conditions a major part of feasibility.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer
A well-designed heat pump can be an excellent solution for an appropriate property, while a modern boiler may remain the practical choice for others. The decision should be based on a technical assessment rather than a generic rule.
