Boiler service vs gas safety check: what is the difference?

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but servicing and safety checking are not necessarily the same scope of work.

What is a boiler service?

A service is maintenance of the appliance in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements. It can involve inspection, cleaning where required, operational testing and relevant checks of internal components.

What is a gas safety check?

A gas safety check focuses on whether gas appliances and installation aspects being checked are operating safely. The precise scope depends on the reason for the check and applicable requirements.

Can both be done together?

A service includes safety-related checks, and a visit can sometimes be arranged to meet more than one maintenance requirement, but customers should be clear about what they need — particularly landlords and commercial operators with specific statutory or record-keeping duties.

Landlords: a routine boiler service should not simply be assumed to replace any legally required landlord gas safety check or record. Ensure the correct statutory requirements are met.

LPG systems

With LPG, the on-site fuel supply introduces additional considerations. Our LPG boiler service guide explains this further, and our Sutton Fields case study shows a recent service and safety-check visit.
