A buffer vessel is a volume of heating water incorporated into a system. Depending on how it is piped and controlled, it can provide additional system volume, assist hydraulic separation or help maintain operating conditions required by the heat pump.
System water volume
Some heat pumps require a minimum system volume to support stable operation and defrost. A buffer can contribute additional water volume where the connected heating circuits alone do not provide enough.
Hydraulic separation
Certain buffer configurations separate heat-pump circulation from secondary heating circuits. This can help manage differing flow requirements, but the design needs to account for temperatures and mixing effects.
Is a buffer always required?
No. Requirements vary by manufacturer, heat-pump model and system design. Adding a buffer automatically is not a substitute for correct hydraulic design.
