Why store the hot water?
A heat pump is generally designed to provide heat efficiently over time rather than deliver the very high instantaneous output associated with a combi boiler. Stored hot water allows the system to build up a usable volume for showers, baths and taps.
Cylinder selection matters
The cylinder must be appropriate for the heat source and household demand. Heat-pump cylinders are designed to transfer heat effectively at the operating conditions of the system.
Unvented cylinders
Many installations use unvented hot-water storage. These systems operate under mains pressure and incorporate specific expansion and safety devices. Read our unvented cylinder servicing guide.
Solar thermal integration
Some cylinders can integrate more than one heat source. Our recent Kingswood project combines an LG heat pump with unvented hot water and solar thermal. Read about solar thermal and heat pumps.
Size the system around demand
Hot-water storage should be selected around the household or building's expected demand and recovery strategy rather than simply copying the old cylinder size.
