Heating advice

Why is my heat pump not heating properly?

A heat pump problem is not always a compressor problem. Controls, water flow, emitters and system design can all affect comfort.

Check what the system is being asked to do

Heat pumps often operate differently from traditional boilers, using longer run times and lower flow temperatures. Control settings, weather compensation and heating schedules can therefore have a large influence on room temperatures.

Water circulation

Poor circulation, air, blocked strainers, closed valves or pump problems can restrict heat delivery. The exact hydraulic checks depend on the system installed.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Emitters must be capable of delivering the required room heat at the design flow temperature. A heat pump cannot compensate for fundamentally undersized emitters simply by running indefinitely.

Outdoor unit condition

An air source heat pump needs appropriate airflow. Obstruction or contamination around the outdoor heat exchanger can affect operation. Frosting and defrost are normal aspects of ASHP operation in certain weather, but persistent abnormal behaviour warrants investigation.

Hot water priorities

Systems that also produce domestic hot water may temporarily prioritise cylinder heating. Understanding the control strategy helps distinguish normal operation from a fault.
