How to prepare your heating for winter

Early autumn is a useful time to find heating problems before the system is working hardest.

Run the heating before you need it

Do not wait for the first very cold day to discover that a boiler, heat pump, pump or control is not working. Test the heating early enough to arrange repairs if something is wrong.

Check for obvious leaks

Look around accessible radiators, valves and visible heating components for signs of water. On a sealed system, repeated pressure loss deserves investigation.

Check controls

Make sure thermostats, programmers and heating schedules operate as expected. For heat pumps, avoid making arbitrary control changes without understanding the system's weather compensation or operating strategy.

Arrange servicing in good time

Planned maintenance before peak winter demand can identify issues and reduce the risk of an avoidable breakdown. Read our boiler servicing guide and heat pump servicing guide.

Heat pump outdoor units

Air source heat pumps need unobstructed airflow. Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements and do not enclose it with stored items or vegetation.
