Should You Repair or Replace Your Boiler?

There is no single age at which every boiler should be replaced. The sensible decision depends on reliability, repair cost, parts, efficiency and the wider system.

When a repair may make sense

If the boiler is otherwise reliable, parts are readily available and the fault is isolated, a repair can be the most economical option. The condition of the wider heating system matters too.

When replacement deserves serious consideration

Repeated breakdowns, obsolete parts, poor reliability, major component failures or a boiler that no longer suits the property can all make replacement more sensible.

Look beyond the boiler itself

Cold radiators, poor circulation, control problems and system contamination can affect comfort even when the boiler is functioning. Replacing the appliance without understanding the system can miss the real cause.

Consider long-term value

Compare the likely repair cost and remaining service life with the cost and benefits of a properly specified replacement. A new boiler also provides an opportunity to improve controls and address system issues where needed.
