Space-heating load
A building loses heat through walls, windows, floors, roofs and ventilation. The amount depends on construction, insulation, exposed area and design temperatures. This is why two houses with the same number of bedrooms can have different heating loads.
Combi boilers and hot water
With a combination boiler, domestic hot-water demand can drive the required appliance output more than the space-heating load. Incoming mains flow and pressure, the number of outlets and expected simultaneous use all need consideration.
System boilers and cylinders
Where hot water is stored in a cylinder, boiler selection and cylinder recovery should be considered together. The correct arrangement depends on the property and usage pattern.
Bigger is not automatically better
An oversized appliance is not a substitute for proper design. Modern boilers can modulate their output, and minimum output as well as maximum output can influence how well the appliance matches the system.
