When should you replace your boiler?

There is no single age at which every boiler must be replaced. Condition, reliability, repair costs and the needs of the property all matter.

A boiler that is working reliably and can be maintained safely does not automatically need replacing because it reaches a particular birthday. Equally, repeatedly repairing an ageing or unreliable appliance may eventually stop making economic sense.

Frequent breakdowns

If call-outs are becoming regular, consider the cumulative repair cost and disruption. Availability and cost of replacement components can also become relevant as equipment ages.

Changes to your home

An extension, additional bathroom or change in occupancy can alter heating and hot-water demand. The correct replacement should be selected for the property rather than simply copying the output of the old appliance.

Condition of the wider heating system

A new boiler is only one part of the system. Radiators, pipework, controls, system water quality and hot-water arrangements should be considered when planning replacement work.

Get the boiler correctly sized

Oversizing is not a substitute for proper assessment. A heating engineer should consider the building and hot-water requirements before specifying the appliance.
