Why heating system water quality matters

The water circulating around a heating system can have a major influence on reliability and component life.

Boilers and heat pumps rely on water circulating efficiently through heat exchangers, pipework and emitters. Corrosion products, debris or unsuitable water condition can contribute to restrictions, component wear and poor heat transfer.

Corrosion inside heating systems

Heating systems contain different metals and components. Appropriate water treatment and good installation practice help reduce internal corrosion. The treatment required depends on the system and manufacturer's instructions.

Protecting modern boilers

Modern heat exchangers and hydraulic components can be sensitive to poor system condition. When replacing a boiler, the existing heating circuit should therefore be assessed rather than assuming that connecting the new appliance is the only work required.

Heat pump systems

Water quality is also relevant to heat pumps, where dependable flow through the heating circuit is important. Ground source systems additionally have a separate collector circuit containing an appropriate brine mixture, which has its own concentration and frost-protection requirements.

Maintenance rather than guesswork

Discoloured water does not by itself tell the whole story. Appropriate testing and assessment can help determine system condition and whether remedial work or treatment is required.
