The problem
We were recently called to a Grade II listed coach house in Kirkella where the original-style heating installation includes a one-pipe circuit and vintage cast-iron radiators. Several radiators were not heating correctly, so the system needed careful cleaning rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
What we did
System cleaning: The heating circuit was flushed using appropriate Fernox cleaning chemicals to help remove accumulated system contamination.
Magnetic filter: The magnetic system filter was flushed and cleaned.
Pump: The circulation pump was stripped out and manually cleaned to remove contamination affecting circulation.
Back wash: The system was thoroughly back washed to remove loosened debris.
Protection: Once clean, the system was dosed with inhibitor to provide ongoing corrosion protection.
The result
All radiators returned to correct operation. The vintage cast-iron radiators are now heating properly throughout the property and the system is ready for the colder months.
Older one-pipe systems require an understanding of how the complete circuit behaves. Poor radiator performance can be caused by sludge, restricted circulation, filters, pumps or a combination of issues, so correct diagnosis matters before deciding on the cleaning method.
