What we found
Our service inspection identified that the heat pump was sitting out of level. With excessive fan/bearing noise also evident, we recommended correcting the installation before reassessing the unit under normal operating conditions.
Remedial work arranged
Drain and isolate: Partially drain and safely isolate the heating system.
Remove the heat pump: Disconnect the outdoor unit and temporarily store it safely at the rear of the property.
Improved drainage: While the system is partially drained, install an additional drain-off point into the kitchen radiator leg using a suitable press-fit tee and drain-off fitting where practicable.
New level base: Construct a new level mounting pad approximately 600 × 1000mm and around 40mm high to provide a firm, correctly levelled support for the unit.
Reinstallation: Once the base is ready, return to reposition and reconnect the heat pump.
System protection: Refill, vent and re-inhibit the heating circuit using Fernox HP-5 supplied by the customer.
Recommissioning: Check for leaks, recommission the heat pump and reassess operation and noise levels.
Why correct levelling matters
A heat pump outdoor unit needs a firm and level base. Correcting the support removes an installation issue and allows the equipment to be assessed properly once recommissioned.
Levelling the unit cannot in itself guarantee that existing fan or bearing noise will disappear. If abnormal noise remains after the unit is correctly installed and recommissioned, the affected components can then be investigated further.
