Engineer Neil is getting to work on an older IVT heat pump serving a swimming pool and underfloor heating system. The machine has not been operational for more than three years — our job is to find out why and, where technically viable, bring it back to life.

Repair before replacement

An older heat pump does not automatically need replacing. This project starts with proper engineering: understanding the installation, establishing the cause of failure and assessing the condition of the heat pump and the wider hydraulic system before deciding what remedial work is justified.

Current status: diagnostic and recommissioning work in progress. We will update this case study with the confirmed fault, repairs and final operating results once the system is running.

A more involved heat-pump installation

This IVT installation is not simply heating a house. It interfaces with a substantial swimming-pool plant room and also serves underfloor heating, so reliable diagnosis means looking beyond the heat pump cabinet itself.

Heat pump: operational checks, controls, temperatures and fault diagnosis.

Swimming pool: investigation of the heat-pump interface with the pool heating and associated plant.

Underfloor heating: checking the heating circuit and its hydraulic operation.

System components: pumps, valves, expansion provision, controls and associated pipework considered as part of the diagnosis.

Recommissioning: proving safe and reliable operation rather than simply clearing a fault and walking away.
