Five sensible gas-safety steps
Gas Safety Week 2026 runs from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September. This year’s message is simple: Take No Chances.
Use a suitably qualified Gas Safe engineer
Check that the business is registered and that the individual engineer is qualified for the type of gas work being carried out.
Ask to see the engineer’s ID card
The card identifies the engineer and lists the categories of gas work they are qualified to undertake. Customers are entitled to check it.
Keep servicing up to date
Routine servicing helps maintain the appliance and gives an engineer the opportunity to identify issues requiring attention. A service and a landlord gas-safety check are not automatically the same thing.
Fit and test carbon-monoxide alarms
Use suitable alarms in the required locations, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test them regularly. An alarm is an additional safeguard, not a replacement for competent gas work.
Never ignore unusual signs
Soot or staining, repeated appliance shutdowns, damaged flues or unusual condensation can require investigation. Headaches, nausea or dizziness may also be associated with carbon monoxide—leave the area and obtain urgent advice.
Leave the property, avoid operating electrical switches or naked flames and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe location. Seek medical help if anyone feels unwell.
